Adding Freon to window air conditioner

The proper composition of Freon is so important for conventional window air conditioners. Less or poor composition of Freon will make the unit cannot work powerful and even can make it consumes higher energy than actually it is. Surely, this is bad news for the energy bill that must be paid for each month. Furthermore, adding Freon to window air conditioning unit is not simple home-DIY project. There are some important points that must be concerned as well. There are also additional equipments for supporting the project as well. Instances, it is better to use proper tools to protect the eyes (goggles) and hands (cloves).

Although this project is welcome for DIY option but it is not recommended for beginner. If you are not sure to handle this project by yourself, it is better to call and hire a professional HVAC technician in your local area for better result! Moreover to buy Freon (r22 refrigerant), you must have the EPA certificate. Once again this means that adding Freon to an air conditioner is not simple. You have to be qualified of EPA certification and also proper training. OK, the following are some basic procedures for adding Freon to A/C unit:

1. The first procedure is how to analyze how much amount of r-22 refrigerant that will be supplied to A/C unit or perhaps your unit doesn’t require for adding Freon. There are some techniques but mostly by using a digital thermometer. It is used to figure out the temperature split. Measure the air-room temperature by locating it in front of the unit. Measure also the lower temperature that is usually located in the air vent (coldest side). For the normal condition, the range of the temperature split (or temperature deferential) is usually around 20 – 18 degrees. But in some cases, it can be lower than 18 or other hand (higher than 20). Conclusion; for higher condition (>> 20 degrees), the unit must be cleaned and for lower condition (<< 18 degrees), the unit must be charged.

2. Then the next procedure is by using tap valve, since there are usually no available service valves in window AC units. Add the tap valve in the suction line. Therefore, first you have to unplug or uninstall the unit from the sleeve or window. Then find the suction line! It is usually located at the compressor (and there are usually also available 2 soldered refrigerant lines that have two different diameters (large and small)). Focus to the larger (the low side refrigerant system). Then add the tap valve by following the guide in the box.

3. Now, it is time for attaching the low-side hose of gage, which is hose-blue on the side of with compound-blue gage, to the tap valve! Ensure the valve on the gage is properly off! In order to avoid purging any of Freon, you have to do this step quickly.

4. Next, plug your window air conditioner in and then turn it to high cool. Do this step for around 60 seconds.

5. After the fourth step, now take a look at the yellow hose and then attach it to the bottle-refrigerant. For purging the air from the line, the valve of bottle must be opened and loosen the hose immediately at the manifold! Once again, do this step quickly as possible as you can.

6. And now, it is the right time to add the Freon to your A/C unit. Utilize the amp-probe meter to measure the amps so thus you get the right amount of Freon that must be charged to the unit. In many cases, you can use the common parameter of 72 – 70 pounds psig for charging.

7. For better result, HVAC super seal can is nice option to discontinue the leak!
