If we are looking for the most efficient air conditioners then Energy Star qualified air conditioner products are one of the best answers. They use advanced and more modern heat transfer technologies to transfer and distribute more of the heat from the air into the coils! This mechanism is the key to make the system use and consume less energy when compressing the refrigerant. So, it is reasonable if Energy Star air conditioning units are claimed will be able to exceed the lowest federal standards for the consumption of energy by at least 15 percent. But we are not talking about Energy Star qualified products right here! Let’s focus to top three parameters that are so closely associated to the efficiency performance of heating and cooling appliances that are; HSPF, SEER and EER! What are they?

What is HSPF?

Well, HSPF stands for Heat Seasonal Performance Factor! It is the most generally used measure of the heating efficiency of a heat pump system. But it is also popular parameter to rate the efficiency performance of air conditioners! It describes the entirety heating output of a heat pump system during the standard heating season (normal condition) in BTU parameter as compared to the entirety electricity consumed in Watt-hours for the same period. So HSPF has units of BTU/ Watt-hr. That total heating output is already included with supplementary electric heat.

A higher value of HSPF indicates more energy efficient of a unit. A HSPF value ?,, eight (8) can be considered worthy & high efficiency of a US Energy Tax Credit!

Heat Seasonal Performance Factor is also associated to the non-dimensional –coefficient of performance- for a heat pump system, which quantifies the ratio of heat energy transferred to electrical energy supplied, independently of the units utilized to measure energy. A seasonally-averaged COP can be converted to HSPF or vice versa! 1 HSPF = 3.413 avg.COP!

What is EER?

EER stands for Energy Efficiency Ratio! It is commonly parameter to measure the efficiency performance of a cooling system when the ambient temperature (outdoor) is at a specific level (95 Fahrenheit). It represents the heat energy removal (cooling capacity) which is stated in BTUH/Watts or we can also say that it is the ratio of (in BTU/ hr) output cooling to (in Watts) input electrical power at a determined operating point!

EER also can be associated to COP (the coefficient of performance), particularly in thermodynamics! A higher value of EER represents more efficient of an air conditioner. And EER is usually more popular to rate commercial or industrial air conditioning!.

And what is SEER?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio! It is commonly popular to quantify the efficiency of CACs (Central Air Conditioners). It can be used to analyze how efficient a cooling system for an entire season. It is calculated by comparing the total cooling of a cooling system for an entire season (in BTUs) to the total energy input for the same period (in Watts-hours). Higher SEER indicates more efficient of a system! Generally, SEER has a higher value than EER for the same system! Overall, SEER for a full year of typical indoor conditions and meteorological! And EER for the time duration considered (some hours of constant conditions). And SEER is usually more popular to rate residential air conditioning!

In addition, one thing that we must consider as well when we want to buy and install an air conditioner (either for CAC model, portable air conditioner model or window unit model) is the size. It can be BTUs, or Tons! BTU is equal to 1060 joules, and 1 ton is equivalent to 12,000 BTU /h!
