One of popular room air conditioners is portable units! They are designed as standalone unit & able to cool a room efficiently without needing to cool the entire house first. Their unique ability that can be moved much practically from one room to another room is the key why they can be the best answer to complement the existing central air conditioning system. This is also the reason why portable units are familiar known as spot cooling unit. Moreover, although they are usually installed and placed on the floor of the room but portable air conditioners also can be adapted to casement windows of the room. How to do it?

Before discussing about on how to adapt a portable air conditioning unit to a casement window, it’s not too bad idea to take a few minutes to know about any crucial issues that we should concern when we want to buy one of them, especially if you seriously want to get a best deal!

  1. Look and prioritize units that are branded and qualified with the “Energy Star” label. Units of this type will work much more efficient and eventually will be helpful to contribute lower utility bills. Unfortunately, they are usually offered & priced more expensive, but with their better efficiency performance is the good point that you should concern, isn’t it!
  2. Choose the correct size for your room! They are usually rated on BTUs or Watts. Higher size indicates higher energy that will be required to operate the unit but also the higher energy of cooling that will be produced to cool the room. Larger square feet room will need higher BTUs size. Note: Avoid having opinion that bigger is better but remember to always to choose and use the correct size (not over size or lower size)!
  3. Consider the value or level of SEER, higher SEER indicates better efficiency performance of the unit.
  4. Consider about the water drainage feature! Some will require a water tray to collect water condensation and must be kept not-overflow otherwise the system of the unit will shut down automatically, while other are already equipped with automatically water drainage feature which allow the system to evaporate the water condensation automatically so there is not needed a water tray.
  5. Read as many as possible testimonials from real & objective consumers before making deal. One of my recommendations if you are looking for one that can cool the room more quickly is Alen C535 portable air conditioner.

Back to the topic of this article, the following is simple guide on how to adapt a portable air conditioning unit to a casement window:

  1. Begin to open your casement window! Take a look at your portable air conditioner and then set it next to the window but ensure the position is close enough in order to make sure the plug will be able to reach the electric outlet properly.
  2. Take a look at the provided flexible hose then connect it to the rear side of your unit. Take a look at the hose collar and then insert it on top of the exhaust opening and don’t forget to twist it clockwise in order to lock it into place correctly.
  3. Take the provided window kit and then slide it into the opening from the top, make sure it is positioned vertically along the side of the window’s casement opposite the hinges. And for better result, secure the window kit to the frame of your window; use the provided screws to drill the window kit into the jamb. Don’t miss to check the vent opening! It must be installed at the bottom of your window frame. This is purposed to make the hose don’t have to run up the window.
  4. Take a look at the back of your portable air conditioner; install also the other flexible hose into the back of your unit. Then turn clockwise in order to twist it into position correctly. Insert the provided hose collar over top and do it like in the step two.
  5. Then try to run every flexible hose from the back of the unit to the window exhaust adaptor provided with the provided installation kit. You can use the window exhaust adaptor to secure them in position as well (insert& push them into it properly).
  6. Now take a look at your window exhaust adaptor and then begin to install it into the opening on the window kit. Push and install it fervently into position, and ensure both sections of hose are properly positioned & secure enough to the window kit.
  7. And it is time to test the performance of your unit. Plug it into a proper electrical outlet then turn it on. Enjoy the fresh cool air from your portable air conditioner.
