Compact and portable feature that can be carried or moved from one room to others are some of great advantages of having a portable air conditioner. It is a spot cooling unit that can cool up the air more efficiently (consumes less electricity). Spot cooling mechanism will only cool the specific area around of you so thus you don’t have to turn on your existing central air conditioner that can consume higher energy because it usually will cool up the entire room. This situation is the key why portable units are one of popular selections to complement our existing central air conditioning systems. With their easier and more practical installation, and with their relatively lighter in weight, they also can be set on a table with flat level.
Although portable air conditioners have already been popular with their more efficiency performance, but there are also some ways and ideas on how to make them can work more and more efficient which eventually will be helpful to reduce our utility bills. Some of those ideas are proper vent-installation, using good and clean air filter, etc.
So, how to make portable air conditioner work more efficient:
- Like mentioned before, if you want your unit can work properly at its optimum efficiency performance then you must make sure that it gets correct placement, especially use the unit for the right size! Avoid having opinion that bigger size is better! Either bigger or smaller, wrong BTUs size can make your unit cannot work optimally at its best efficiency performance. So use the unit for the right size of the room as well as the manufacturer’s directions.
- Make sure the room has a proper insulation system. Installing insulation is so helpful to minimize the outside air sources! Don’t forget to shut off windows and doors! Less number of outside air sources will be helpful to improve the efficiency performance of your portable air conditioning unit.
- Although portable AC unit is supported to be placed on the floor of the room, but it is better to choose the higher position (like table) than the room’s floor! This is positive idea to increase and improve the cooling efficiency. But if you choose to place the unit on the floor, you can try to utilize a small fan in order to direct the fresh cool air up towards the ceiling.
- Inspect & clean the air filter of the unit regularly! It is not only important to filter and collect any bad particles like dust, but also its function is also associated to the cooling efficiency. Bad or dirty filter can make the unit work harder which eventually will make your unit consume higher energy than actually it is (at its normal condition). Even there are also some types that not only should be cleaned regularly but also must be replaced at certain period (depending on the quality of the air conditioner filter itself).
- Although your unit is moveable home appliance but it also must be vented properly otherwise it will work improperly! It requires expelling the hot-temperature air; therefore with the improper venting the hot-temperature air cannot flow to outsides as well and eventually will make your unit be useless and inefficient for cooling. In addition: Make sure the venting mechanism of your unit by using the venting kits! They are usually available for most any size of windows. Venting kits will be helpful for user to vent the exhaust hose out the window without requiring or leaving spaces for the outside air to enter.
