Mini split heat pump appliances are one of various heating and cooling appliances that can work more efficient with eco-friendly technology of heat pump itself. They don’t need to use ductwork mechanism when working, so thus we can call them as ductless unit. Like other common split models, they are divided into two major units that are; outdoor unit and indoor unit. Outdoor unit usually consists of compressor, condenser coil, fan and other components. Then indoor unit consists of air handling components (valve &cooling coil) that usually have already been designed sleek in chasing style (available for ceiling suspending, hanging or mounted on the wall, and floor standing) and will meet to the existing decoration of the room nicely. Therefore they not only promise satisfied performance to transfer comfort fresh cooled-air into the room but also will work so noiseless. So what their pros and cons?
Between outdoor unit and indoor unit, there are several components that connect both units such as the condensate drain, power cable on the conduit house, section & refrigerant tubing, etc. There are several benefits and advantages when using mini split heat pump units. They looks so mini in size but powerful enough to cool the air either for the small or medium rooms. They are superior to heat and cool the zone space of the room more specifically (spot cooling). They are not ideal to use for many people in the large room but ideally for individually usage like if you and a few people (one or two people) are in the small-medium rooms.
The installations of ductless mini split heat pumps are not too difficult like the installation of central air condition units, because they don’t need ductwork mechanism. Therefore, the installation will require less effort! You can hire and pay a professional installer for the installation in order to make sure your mini split heat pump unit is installed correctly.
Pros of mini split heat pumps:
- They are designed relatively smaller in size, therefore will be flexible enough for cooling and heating individual rooms (smart option for spot cooling).
- The outdoor unit can be connected to more than two air handling units (indoor units). Therefore, they can be used to cool multiple rooms! Moreover, each handling unit is also equipped with the programmable thermostat.
- Like mentioned before, they are relatively easier to be installed. For conduit (in order to connect the outdoor unit with the indoor units), we need only around 3 inch hole through the wall (small hole will be helpful to keep your room or your home safer). We can also locate the outdoor unit around fifty feet from the air handling unit if necessary!
- Their ductless design will be helpful to encourage the efficiency performance, so thus there is no energy loss due to ductwork mechanism. Theoretically, ductless unit work 30 percent more efficient than unit with ductwork mechanism.
- Compressor that is housed into the outside of the room will be so helpful to make mini split heat pump work more quietly!
Cons of ductless mini split heat pumps:
- The up-front cost is not cheap! For 12,000 BTU (per ton) of cooling capacity, you need to pay $1,400 to $2,100. This cost is twice as much as free standing units (window AC units or portable AC units) with similar power cooling capacity and 30 percent more than central air conditioning.
- Improper calculation of the size of cooling capacity (especially for each air-handling unit) will make the system result short-cycling problem. This will lead to improper performance to control the temperature and humidity. So the size is so crucial!
