Unfortunately, their performance will optimum or not is closely influenced by the level of the humidity and the outside temperature. They can work optimally if the environment humidity in you local area is not too high. Therefore, geographically they are not recommended to be used for any area. They are perfect choice for areas that have dry climate. Several popular types of them that currently available are portable models, window mounted types, roof-mounted units, etc.
Like air conditioners or other home cooling appliances, swamp coolers also require the proper maintenance to ensure they keep working excellently. If you have adequate budget, why not to get a sign contract with a qualified HVAC contractor in your local area for the maintenance, at least once a year. However, fortunately you can also do a little DIY maintenance to give proper maintenance for your unit. There are some parts or components that should be checked and maintained regularly with DIY option, particularly if those parts don’t get the serious damage. The following are helpful checklist on how to do the swamp cooler maintenance properly with DIY option:
(1). Clean the outside of unit! It is easily procedure that helpful to prolog the lifetime of the unit and will make it looks clean at the first glance. Make ensure the unit is not in use (in turn off mode) then you can use the cloth to wipe it down. Note; as possible to avoid using detergents or other harsh chemicals!
(2). Then, ensure the evaporative cooling pads are still in good condition or not. The pads are usually made from materials that resistant to mildew like the aspen wood shavings! It is so recommended to replace the pads minimum once in two seasons. The ideal time to replace them is usually at the beginning of on-season (summer season). Pads could be damage because several factors like poor quality of water. In addition, replacing the pads is usually one package with removing or cleaning the belts. Ensure they are free from crack and wear!
(3). Next is water tank cleaning. It is important procedure especially if your local area has hard-water! If necessary, you can use the mild shop to make the cleaning process can be finished easier. Check the normal water level when the unit working, make ensure it is not too low or too much water. If you see it is not normal you can make it be normal by adjusting the float valve. Low water level will make the unit cannot work maximum and on the other hand too much water is too risky to stimulate some leakages problem.
(4) Make ensure your room has adequate ventilation for air circulation. It is important in order to keep the continuous supply of humidity and outside temperature for the unit. And during the DIY maintenance, please ensure everything is put back into the proper place and no-visible gaps!
(5). Storage suggestions! The pads and air filter should be removed before you store the unit. Remove the water in the tank and drain it completely! Choose the location that dry and far away from the foot traffic. You can use the original box or a cover to protect the unit and its all parts securely during off-season.
