a) First, try to remove the filter from the unit! Ensure you remove it carefully and gently or as possible you should remove it without force. You can do this step properly by looking at the manufacture’s guidelines of your unit, especially any guidelines on how to do it.

b) Then find the right location to clean the filter such as tub or basin, kitchen sink, etc. Make ensure that cleaning place is adequate to submerge it. The procedure is going to easier if you choose the location that can provide a spray nozzle and able to accumulate and dispose grime, dust or salver properly.

c) To get the optimal result, you can use a cleaning-mix between fifty percent water and fifty percent vinegar. Then submerge the filter into the cleaning-mix water for couple of hours (2 to 3 hours). Then by combining and using the nozzle, you can remove the dirt from the filter easier.

d) The last, drain the filter and as possible don’t ever try to rinse it.

e) Ensure it is completely dry! Then now you can install it to its proper position in your unit. In addition, always obey the manufacture’s guideline.

The above tips can be applied well for standard types of air conditioning filters. For other types that have more elaborate-design, it is better to discuss or ask to a qualified HVAC contractor in your local area on how to clean or replace them properly!
